フランス語の« h »は黙字で発音されません。しかしながら、単語の頭 (handicap) や
« dehors » « Tahiti » « Sahara »などの単語の場合は、音節を作るために子音と母音の結合を可能にしたり、妨げたりします。

子音ー母音の結合を可能にする« h »を「無音（のh）」といい、子音ー母音の結合を妨げる場合は「有音（のh）」といいます。

「無音の« h »」は発音されず、エリジオン、リエゾン、アンシェヌマンが可能です。
