La "h" francesa es una letra muerta que no se pronuncia. Sin embargo, al principio de palabra (handicap) y en palabras como "dehors",
"Tahiti", "Sahara", permite o impide la unión de la consonante y de la vocal para formar una sílaba.

Llamamos "h muda" a la "h" que permite la unión entre la consonante y la vocal y "h aspirada" a la que impide esta unión.

La "h muda" no se pronuncia y admite las elisiones, las "liaisons" y los encadenamientos.
