What is the difference between these two sounds:

Do you find these sounds difficult to pronounce?

The [y] is a vowel specific to French: it is pronounced by pursuing your lips as if you were blowing out the candles of your birthday cake. Many sounds in French are pronounced with the front part of the mouth, and rounded lips.

  • The lips are forward,
  • The mouth is mid-opened,
  • The mouth is rounded.
 
  • The lips are very forward,
  • The mouth is slightly opened,
  • The mouth is very rounded.

The tongue is forward and touches the bottom teeth.

The tongue is backward and does not touch the teeth.
The body and the mouth are tense. The body and the mouth are relaxed.
